Columbia is the trade union murder capital of the world. Since 2002, more than 470 workers\u2019 leaders have been brutally killed, usually by paramilitaries hired by private companies intent on crushing the unions. Among these unscrupulous corporate brands is the poster boy for American business: Coca-Cola.<\/p>\n

Talk to Martin Gil: His brother Isidro was killed at point-blank range while working at the Coca-Cola bottling plant in Carepa, because he was part of a union bargaining unit. Like most violent crimes committed against Colombian union leaders, Gil\u2019s murder went unpunished.<\/p>\n

However, U.S. lawyers Daniel Kovalik and Terry Collingsworth, as well as activist Ray Rogers, stepped in and launched an ambitious crusade against the behemoth Coca-Cola. In an incredible three-year saga, filmmakers Germ\u00e1n Guti\u00e9rrez and Carmen Garcia follow these heroes in a legal game of cat and mouse. From Bogot\u00e1 to New York, Guatemala to Atlanta, Washington to Canada, The Coca-Cola Case maintains the suspense of a hard-fought struggle.<\/p>\n

The lawyers filed several cases at the U.S. federal court against Cola-Cola for murder, abduction and torture committed in Colombia and Guatemala. Thanks to activist Ray Rogers, they also attacked the brand image of the Atlanta-based giant, with the devastating campaign Stop Killer Coke!<\/strong>, causing dozens of U.S. colleges and universities to boycott the drink.<\/p>\n

Still the company would not give up. After five years of haggling, will the lawyers get justice? After studying filmmaking, Germ\u00e1n Guti\u00e9rrez worked first as an assistant cameraman and later as a cameraman for \u201cRadio-Canada\u201d, the \u201cNational Film Board\u201d and a variety of production companies. He soon moved on to directing, initially focusing on social and political issues.<\/p>\n

This work took him to the four corners of the earth, often to conflict zones: Cambodia, Sarajevo, South Africa, Rwanda and El Salvador. Guti\u00e9rrez now has over twenty films to his credit, including La familia latina<\/em> (1986) \u2013Golden Sheaf Award, Yorkton Festival; Societies Under the Influence<\/em> (1997), Martin\u2019s Inferno<\/em> (2002) and Who Shot My Brother?<\/em> (2005) \u2013Audience Choice Award at the Festival du nouveau cin\u00e9ma). He has also collaborated on a number of television series, including Surviving the Wild<\/em> (1999) and Technopolis<\/em> (2001). Carmen Garc\u00eda made her start as a producer in 1984 at Cin\u00e9-Contact with L\u2019enjeu des femmes<\/em>, a documentary series directed by filmmakers from across the world, including Mira Nair. In 1988, she co-founded \u201cArgus Films\u201d with Germ\u00e1n Guti\u00e9rrez and produced Germ\u00e1n Guti\u00e9rrez\u2019s Le syst\u00e8me \u00abD\u00bb<\/em>, Gilles Courtemanche\u2019s L\u2019\u00c9glise du sida<\/em> and Mary Ellen Davis\u2019 La terre des autres<\/em>.<\/p>\n

She also collaborated with companies such as \u201cPixcom\u201d and \u201cGala Films\u201d and with the \u201cNational Film Board of Canada\u201d as a producer, script writer and director. Since 2003, after a contract at \u201cTelefilm Canada\u201d, she has given a new direction to \u201cArgus Films\u201d. Recent titles include The Coca-Cola Case<\/em> (2009); Sans banque et sans regret<\/em> (2009); Nadia\u2019s Journey<\/em> (2007) \u2013Prix cam\u00e9ra au poing, RIDM, Special Jury Prize, Figra; Who Shot My Brother?<\/em> (2005) \u2013Audience Choice Award, Festival du Nouveau Cin\u00e9ma, nominated for a Jutra award, Best of Festival, Columbus.]] present a searing indictment of the Coca-Cola empire and its alleged kidnapping, torture and murder of union leaders trying to improve working conditions in Colombia, Guatemala and Turkey.
